XTree Fan Page:

Since I still had an archive of (very) old guestbook postings from 1997/98, I restored them as a "Guestbook-Archive" page.
Also made some clean-up of the "Directory_page".
So the XTree Fan Page is still alive since more than 20 years now!

XTree Fan Page - Links section:

Since many of the links are outdated meanwhile, I replaced all broken ones with links to the original page content fortunately preserved by >archive.org.

"Play" XTreeGold in your browser:

Archive.org not only saves the history of many many homepages once around, but also has an online software archive, for example, you can play old DOS games in your browser. One of the "games" you can "play" is:
>XTreeGold 3.01 - have fun!!

XTree Fan Page:

Not a real update, but removed the affiliate links to Google and Amazon. The latter has been here since December 1997, when Amazon was just 2 years old and new and really cool stuff. Meanwhile, the situation has changed somewhat. Also, unfortunately, had to remove the (broken) Guestbook section.

Nov-30-2014
XTree Fan Page:

OK, it seems it caught me again these days, to my own surprise also now even more updates on this page...

Added: In the Versions section two new entries for the early XTree 1.06 version and for XTreeProGold 1.44, both along with screenshots! Added a screenshot to the XTreeEasy entry and some minor updates on version history.

Added: An entry for a remarkable GUI XTree clone for Linux: GTree and for a new XTree-alike MAC OS X filemanager with the, ahem, somewhat special name "QuollEyeTree", both in the Clones section.
Thanks to Ian Binnie, the author of both of these new projects!

Updated: Minor corrections and link updates in the Clones section

Updated: Some corrections and link updates in the Timeline section

XTree Fan Page:

Normally, as you may have noticed, I don't do any updates any more on the XTree Fan Page meanwhile, however, I will NOT close it down, but keep it as it is - as a kind of museum piece (as also the HTML of this page is hopelessly outdated - but as long as it still works....).

Well, but nevertheless, here IS a tiny update now; I finally could manage to get an old floppy of a German XTreeEasy Version, so here's the entry and a screenshot:

Added: In the Versions section an entry for the German XTreeEasy 1.00 version.

Fixed: Guestbook is now working again!

XTree Fan Page:

Added: In the Versions section an entry for the Dutch XTreeProGold 1.44 version - thanks to Gert-Jan!

Fixed: Font size in the guestbook is now readable again.

The XTree Forum has been temporarely closed for new postings due to large amount of spam, which began to constantly flood the forum. So I had to delete a number of ugly spam posts every single day, and I admit, I became tired of that.
So until I find an alternative solution (like mandatory registration or forum spam filter software), there cannot be posted any new messages to the forum. All existing messages can, however, be viewed as before.

XTree celebrates its 20th anniversary!XTree 20th birthday

Well, *no* april fool's joke today, it's real, 20 years ago, at the West Coast Computer Faire on April 1st 1985, XTree was introduced to the public. Congratulations! Although sales were ceased by its new owners some eight years ago, XTree still enjoys an enormous popularity - and many people still run this good ol' DOS warhorse on their stylish super multimedia GUI operating systems as well as on some valiant vintage DOS machines.
And thanks to some brave programmer heroes, the unsurpassed XTree concept and interface is available again for today's operating systems - especially with >ZTreeWin by Kim Henkel and >UnixTree by Rob Juergens, to name two of the most mature one's. And there are many more XTree-clones available for a lot of different systems. So everything which makes up the XTree idea is still happily alive. Happy birthday!

And what is such a birthday without a decent present? So here is one:
A new UnixTree version, after a long, long hiatus, introduced punctual to honor XTree's 20th birthday:

SCO claims intellectual property on XTree

LINDON, Utah, Apr 1, 2004 -- The SCO Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: SCOX), the company which is known to have invented Linux, today announced to claim its ownership of XTree intellectual property, source code and copyrights.

The company's CEO, Darl McBride, said in a statement that "SCO owns much of the core XTree intellectual property and has full rights to license this technology and enforce the associated patents and copyrights."

SCO is ready to proceed with litigation against every single XTree user on this planet: "We are just protecting our rightfull intellectual property for the benefit of the free world and against the axis of evil", McBride said today.

He also threatens that SCO is identifying XTree users for possible litigation. He said SCO had for the last month gathered information on XTree users, and identified about 10% of the total people ever using XTree on their computer. McBride added that he expected that figure to rise to 40% over the coming weeks before SCO would take action.

Furthermore, SCO today announced the availability of the SCO Intellectual Property License for XTree. The run-time license permits the use of SCO's intellectual property, in binary form only, as contained in XTree programs. By purchasing a SCO Intellectual Property License, customers avoid infringement of SCO's intellectual property rights in any XTree version. The license will be available for a mere $2,850 per CPU and year of usage (also backdated) and there will be a special discount for systems with more than 16 CPUs running XTree. So a typical XTree user having installed XTree programs since version 1.0 from 1985 on a computer with a single CPU will have to pay no more than $54,150 for the past 19 years.

XTree Fan Page:

*F_i_n_a_l_l_y*, in the seventh year of its life, the XTree Fan Page now provides "Hotkey support" - *somewhat* similar to that of XTree itself (however, the latter has it since its birth...).

So, look at the Directory or File-"commands" at the |Bottom of each page: Hit the "Alt"-key plus the letter key printed in upper case, and thus it should work!!

Well, in fact, the "command" is just a link, and, while the trick is done by adding an accesskey="[letter]"-expression to the HTML link code, browser support is very varying...:

MS Internet Explorer 4.x : Direct access of the link target with ALT-[letter]
MS Internet Explorer 5.x/6.x : Focus is set on the link, to follow it, you have to hit "Enter"
Netscape 4.x : No support
Netscape 6.x/7.x : Direct access of the link target with ALT-[letter]
Mozilla/Firebird/>Firefox (rules!) : Direct access of the link target with ALT-[letter]
Opera (any version) : No support
Konqueror (any version) : No support

On a Mac, the MS Internet Explorer should also support it by using the Ctrl-[letter] combination.
Mac/Safari : I don't know (maybe someone could ] me ?)

For more information on accesskey support and some of its quirks, see >this excellent page

Last but not least I must admit that this technique unfortunately does hijack any possible previous bindings of the browser itself (like ALT-'F' to access the File menu). So, at least I hope this is not too confusing/annoying. Comments are welcomed to be posted to the XTree Forum.
